WHAT IS ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS? - STATEMENT

Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength, and hope, so that they may overcome their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.  The only requirement to be a member of A.A. is a desire to stop drinking.

There are no fees or dues to pay to be a member of A.A.;  we support ourselves through our own contributions.  A.A. is not affiliated with any sect, religion, political party, organization, or institution;  we do not wish to engage in controversy, and we neither support nor oppose any cause.  Our main goal is to stay sober and to help other alcoholics achieve sobriety.

A.A. is concerned solely with the recovery and continued sobriety of the individual alcoholics who turn to the fellowship for help.  A.A. does not participate in alcoholism research, nor in medical or psychiatric treatments, and we do not support any cause.

Alcoholics Anonymous holds no opinion on matters unconnected with its activities;  therefore, its name should never be involved in public controversies.
